The Ramifications of the War in Ukraine for Latin America and the Caribbean: Political, Socioeconomic and Cultural Perspectives
The Bulletin of Latin American Research (BLAR) publishes original research of current interest on Latin America and the Caribbean as well as the Latin American Diaspora from all academic disciplines within the Social Sciences and Humanities. Given the ongoing war in Ukraine and its global sequelae, we are inviting contributions to a virtual Special Issue that will explore its ramifications for the Latin American and Caribbean regions.
Russia-Ukraine tensions escalated from 2021 and on 24 February 2022 Russia launched a military operation to invade Ukraine. More than a year after, the war goes on and its consequences thus far are devastating, multifaceted and global. More than 12 million people are estimated to have been displaced by the war. The lack of basic commodities produced by Russia and Ukraine has led to a global energy and food sovereignty crisis, inflation and the consequent cost of living crisis, and a deepening of poverty. With efforts to find alternative energy supplies, steps to tackle climate change and the contemporary environmental crisis have been deaccelerated or postponed.
Such global and diverse ramifications of the Russia-Ukraine war raise questions about the subjectivities, affects, cultural products, political responses, and socioeconomic conditions that emerge in a region like Latin America and the Caribbean to explicitly or implicitly address the war.
How is the Russia-Ukraine war present in or absent from the LAC region?
In what ways is the war affecting the economies of LAC?
How is the war being represented in the region’s cultural production?
What is being done at the policy level to address the impacts of the war?
How are LAC governments participating in diplomacy and international attempts to bring an end to the war or deal with it?
How are different actors in Latin America and the Caribbean region speaking and writing about the war or imagining it?
What affects and subjective feelings are emerging in the LAC region in relation to the war?
Has the war opened new migratory dynamics between LAC, Russia and Ukraine?
How have past interactions between the LAC region and Russia or Ukraine influenced attitudes or responses to the war?
What is the value of historical approaches to the region to understand the ramifications of a global phenomenon such as the Russia-Ukraine war?
We invite scholars from diverse backgrounds in the social sciences and humanities to contribute original research articles that shed light on this complex set of questions emerging out of the Russia-Ukraine war.
