Call for Expressions of Interest:
PILAS Committee 2025/26
Application deadline: 15th August 2025
As we near the end of our term in office, we are inviting expressions of interest from prospective committee members for 2025/26. PILAS (Postgraduates in Latin American Studies) is the postgraduate affiliate of the Society for Latin American Studies (SLAS). PILAS is run by and for postgraduate students whose work, in any academic discipline, is about Latin America. Based in the United Kingdom, PILAS is dedicated to fostering an interactive, supportive community for postgraduate members of SLAS.
Details of our previous events can be found here or on our Instagram, Bluesky and Twitter/X accounts.
Our Aims and Objectives
-
Work with the SLAS committee and advise on matters that directly impact PG students.
-
Continue to grow the visibility of PILAS as the postgraduate affiliate of SLAS.
-
Offer an accessible and supportive community to PG students.
-
Run events for PG students, including the annual PILAS conference.
We are looking for a total of six people to form the next PILAS committee, which will begin their work on the 1st of September. The committee will be formed of a President, Treasurer, Secretary and Conference Secretary, with two additional ordinary committee members to be delegated responsibility for specific areas such as events, communications or work-in-progress workshops.
-
The President of the PILAS committee will oversee the work of PILAS and sits on the SLAS committee.
-
The PILAS Treasurer is expected to cost any events and present proposed spending plans to the SLAS committee. They will work with the SLAS Treasurer to ensure funds are spent and accounted for in line with SLAS policies.
-
The PILAS Secretary is responsible for scheduling and organising meetings, overseeing the website and social media and ensuring continuity between committees.
-
The PILAS Conference Secretary will take the lead on organising the annual PILAS conference.
Members of the PILAS committee should be enrolled as PGR students in a UK-based institution. To apply to join the next committee, please contact us at pilascontact@gmail.com, indicating which role you would be interested in undertaking. We will subsequently host an informal meeting to provide more information and to answer any questions.
